Creating an Inclusive and Equitable Facilities Organization

The most successful teams are more diverse in terms of ethnicity, religion, gender identity, disability, and other factors. For a variety of reasons, facility leaders should actively work to create a culture of inclusivity and equity in their team and organization, from hiring, to onboarding. But moving beyond check boxes to real equity requires facility managers to take a long hard look at their own practices, and be open to listening to and learning from their team.

Our panel will provide practical advice, drawn from the experiences of facility departments, about diversity, inclusion, and equity, including recruiting from a wider pool of candidates, understanding invisible barriers to authentic inclusion, and why this current moment of social justice reform is a critical juncture for their department.

Improving Employee Engagement And Team Morale

Facility managers and maintenance and engineering managers know their list of priorities is long and seems to grow longer every day as technology develops, and environmental standards and regulations change.

But there's another aspect to the position that managers must consider in addition to balancing budgets and making sure the HVAC and plumbing systems are operating as they should — boosting employee engagement and improving staff morale.

Engagement and improving morale are aspects of the job that some may not think of in the FM playbook. However, keeping good employees engaged in their jobs is an important part of being in facility management today. Making technicians, middle managers, and lower-level employees feel valued plays a vital role in a department's success. The rewards are long-lasting and beneficial to everyone involved.
