While managing trash collection from the workplace and public areas is about straightforward operational logistics, the success of a recycling program is largely dependent on the behavior of the individuals using the bins. Getting people to recycle correctly and avoid cross contamination is not a matter of luck or "making people care" but of designing an intelligent bin and signage infrastructure that anticipates normal behavior patterns. The presenter will discuss recently published research about recycling in office desk side settings, as well as engage the audience in a discussion about design features for recycling in public spaces.
