Not all healthcare facilities are the same, but every facility owner wants the same things for their occupants:
A sustainable and safe environment that promotes health and productivity.
For emergency medical services, it's important their buildings are high performing 24/7.
Such is the case in Ontario, Canada, where the Kitchener-Waterloo Emergency Medical Services Facility needed to operate 24/7 in harsh winter climates. The other challenge, ensuring the building was energy efficient and achieved LEED Certification.
REHAU radiant heating system helped the facility achieve both. The facility is LEED® Gold certified under Canada's LEED guidelines and uses 60 percent less energy compared to a conventionally designed new building. As with many healthcare facilities, one of the challenges was supplying the entire facility with heat without driving up costs. The REHAU radiant heating solution uses floor, ceiling and/or wall surfaces to gently and efficiently radiate heat virtually eliminating cold spots and temperature fluctuations.
In addition to radiant heating, a REHAU snow and ice melting (SIM) system was installed to enhance the safety of Kitchener-Waterloo Hospitals' sidewalks and drive-throughs at the main and emergency entrances. By quickly removing dangerous snow and ice, SIM systems help to protect facilities and reduce the risk of accidents and liability exposure.
The result of both these systems is lower energy costs, a productive and safe environment for emergency workers who can concentrate on saving lives.
