Cover Story

Hurricane Ida made landfall in the Gulf Coast as a stronger hurricane than Katrina. The entire city of New Orleans was without power for days. But the damage didn’t stop there. The storm continued to wreak havoc as it continued up through the country. The East Coast experienced significant flooding, especially in New York City. We will profile facility managers in both the Gulf and East Coast about their experiences during this recent storm. We’ll cover their approaches to emergency preparedness and disaster recovery.

Deferred Maintenance

Studies of organizations show that on average, for every dollar "saved" by deferring maintenance, there comes a four dollar increase in future capital renewal costs. If managers are to be successful in changing the culture that results in deferring maintenance, they must present a case that lays out all of the costs of deferred maintenance, from emergency repairs to collateral damage.

Indoor Air Quality

On average, we spend 90 percent of our time indoors. Given that percentage, our efforts toward indoor air hygiene have not always been as intense as they should be, especially in high occupancy buildings such as offices and school classrooms. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of hygienic air and the direct effects poor air quality has on the health and cognition of office workers and students. This article looks at five best practices of good indoor air hygiene.
