Ensure Clean Drinking Water for Michigan Schools

We're here to bring you up to speed on a key legislative development, the "Clean Drinking Water Access Act," often referred to as the "Filter First" program. This legislation requires schools and childcare centers to install certified filtration systems in bottle filling stations by the 2025-2026 school year, aimed at enhancing water safety. It's a great opportunity to upgrade broken fountains or retrofit filtered bottle filling stations to existing units.

Key Actions Required:

  • Develop a Management Plan: By January 2025, formulate a water management plan that includes sampling, testing, and filter replacements.
  • Install Filtered Water Stations: Install at least one filtered bottle-filling station per 100 occupants in key areas, compliant with NSF/ANSI standards.
  • Regular Testing and Maintenance: Perform annual water tests and adhere to scheduled filter replacements to ensure ongoing safety.
