Tenant Support for Sustainability Goals

Commercial building tenants may want their companies and buildings to be more sustainable, but they often feel powerless to do anything worthwhile if their building owner doesn't make sustainability a priority. Fortunately, LEEDv4 offers some terrific options for greening tenant space. LEED for Interior Design and Construction (often shortened to LEED ID+C) helps project teams that may not have control over the whole building modify interior tenant spaces to improve the occupant experience while lessening environmental impacts on the planet. Click through to find out more from the October issue of Building Operating Management and let me know in a comment if you have tenants clamoring for such options.

Physical Security in Public Spaces

A recently introduced bill, the STOP Act, or the Stopping Threats on Pedestrians Act, focuses on funding physical barriers to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety in public spaces. The version of the bill introduced in the U.S. Senate would authorize $50 million in spending over the next decade for such projects. Click through to learn more about the beauty of bollards and other barrier options, as well as find information on the ASTM F 2656 standard, which facility managers can look to when considering physical security barriers. As always, you're welcome to leave me a comment or a question related to your work with physical security in public spaces.

Ideas for Your Next Water Efficiency Project

Many FMs have taken some steps to make more efficient use of water — installing aerators or low flow urinals or toilets, for example. But for most facilities, plenty of opportunities remain. That's especially true in light of rising water and sewer charges. And if an organization is looking to reduce its environmental footprint, water efficiency initiatives should be part of that effort. Building Operating Management Contributing Editor Rita Tatum identified ten measures — some fairly basic, some pretty advanced — that you can consider if you're looking for a next step. Click through to check out her list, and leave a comment letting me know where water efficiency falls in your list of priorities.
