What The Heck is a Blue Roof?

An article in the September technology issue of Building Operating Management explains eight technology developments shaping high-performance exteriors. Many of these may be familiar to facility managers — weather-resistant barriers, cool roofs, and new glazing technology — but the authors also describe something I hadn't been familiar with before. A blue roof is a new kind of roof that "attenuates peak stormwater flow from the roof to accommodate the limited capacity of an existing antiquated infrastructure." Basically, the idea is to minimize stormwater run-off, saving both the facility money and helping protect a community's increasingly fragile sewer systems. Have you heard of blue roofs? Used one? What do you see as the advantages?
