FM Salary Survey Data on FacilitiesNet.com

If you're interested in knowing how your salary compares to your peers', Facilitiesnet.com is the place to look. The extensive salary database in the Facilitiesnet.com Career Center offers salary information for a wide range of FM-related job titles, plus the option to do a custom search to try to fine tune the information. And it's all available at no charge. But, to keep the information current, we need your help. We update the salary database every year, and depend on responses from facility professionals. Individual responses are only used in aggregate and your personal information is kept confidential. The salary survey is open now and it only takes about five minutes to complete. Click here to take the survey, and then check out previous year's results to see how your salary compares.

Use Facility Design to Improve School Safety

Filed under things I wish didn't exist: intruder lockdown drills. One of the littles I know doesn't mind them too much — his class hides in the coat closet, where it's dark and warm, so he usually takes a quick nap. Sometimes his teacher sings a little whispered song to keep them calm. Thankfully, there's a lot facility managers can do to improve school security beyond lockdown drills — without trying to harden the building into a fortress. Click through to read some examples. What have you done to improve the safety of your school facility, while keeping it a welcoming, productive, and happy place to learn? Please share your best practices in the comments.

Sustainability and Resilience Are Linked

Sustainability and resilience are linked in many ways. An article in the June issue of Building Operating Management profiled a new VA hospital in New Orleans called Project Legacy, built after Hurricane Katrina. In addition to its LEED Silver certification, the hospital had implemented several strategies that make the building more resilient against floods. But there are also a few ways sustainability goals may be at odds with ensuring that a building is resilient. Add comments to this thread regarding your thoughts on meeting what some consider conflicting FM mandates.
