In Search of Advice for Leading Facility Teams

A reader of myFacilitiesNet is in search of advice for leading facility teams. She says, "To multi task and lead teams in these challenging times is quite unique. The culture is changing in that teams no longer want to be managed, but to be lead. I love this change, but it does not come without challenges." How do you lead people to do their best work?

Where Will Your Next Great Energy Efficiency Idea Come From?

These days, it's not uncommon for your building occupants to be pretty well-informed about energy efficiency. They're doing it in their personal lives, and they may have ideas on how to contribute in your building in their professional lives, as well. I wrote recently about how the opening scene in the new Netflix series Ozark shows Jason Bateman's accountant character wondering about the efficiency of the south-facing windows in an office space he's thinking of leasing. Have you ever gotten a great idea from one of your occupants? What was it?

The Building Will See You Now:
IoT and Wellness

You probably saw the headlines on the Wisconsin company that's planning on making microchip implantation an option for its employees, to facilitate access control...and paying for food on campus. Wearables, and implants, are probably going to start playing a greater role in how we interact with the built environment. In the Wisconsin microchip example, they're being used for convenience. And it's hard to lose or steal a hand, so that helps bolster facility security. But what I'm excited for is when IoT tech starts tweaking my environment to benefit my wellness. In the September issue of Building Operating Management there's an article on human-centric lighting, and lighting is among the building systems where some pretty advanced options exist to support wellness. Click through to learn more. The conversation on wellness in the built environment is bound to only get more interesting from here.

Rank Your Risk

Stay calm, but get real. That's the motto I'd put on a T-shirt to wrap up a good approach to security in commercial facilities. You can't just sashay away from risk, wishfully thinking that just because X event has never happened, it never will. You can't just shut your eyes and pretend that what you don't know about won't hurt you in the end. But you also can't freak out and hyper-harden every weakness in your facility because A) you don't have the money and B) it's impossible. What you can do is stay calm, do a thorough security risk assessment, and focus on mitigating the vulnerabilities that would hurt your facility or organization the most. Click through to learn more and find out how to get started.
