Facility Management Tool:
BIMs of All Structures?

A member of MyFacilitiesNet.com is in the process of developing standards for a client who owns multiple properties. JoeClark says he is wondering if there would be a benefit to creating BIMs of all of the structures, as a facility management tool. He also wants to manage the properties on a campus-by-campus basis, as well as globally. He asks, "Am I asking or expecting too much from any software? Or are there 3rd party applications that have [that], and manage the data that we are looking for?" Leave a comment to share your experience or recommendations.

Rank Your Risk With a Security Risk Assessment

Stay calm, but get real. That's the motto I'd put on a T-shirt to wrap up a good approach to security in commercial facilities. You can't just sashay away from risk, wishfully thinking that just because X event has never happened, it never will. You can't just shut your eyes and pretend that what you don't know about won't hurt you in the end. But you also can't freak out and hyper-harden every weakness in your facility because A) you don't have the money and B) it's impossible. What you can do is stay calm, do a thorough security risk assessment, and focus on mitigating the vulnerabilities that would hurt your facility or organization the most. Achieve High-Performance HVAC with IoT

While IoT, or Internet of Things, is a concept the general public is getting up to speed on, its foundational concepts are familiar territory for facility managers. This is particularly true in the HVAC category. Take this excerpt from Building Operating Management: "The technological foundation of IoT is not new to the commercial facilities industry; rather many of IoT's basic concepts were developed based on the needs of commercial facilities. For example, the use of an array of sensors in the physical environment to allow for evaluation and manipulation of HVAC systems dates to the invention of the first non-computer enabled building pneumatic control systems. Similarly, the introduction of the microprocessor into commercial facility HVAC control systems happened concurrently in the early 1980s with the maturing of computer and information technologies that enable IoT today." While the foundational concepts are not news, things are moving fast. Click through to learn about the convergence of IoT and direct digital controls to enable high-performance HVAC.

Vehicle Attacks Gaining a Higher Place on FM Agenda

In a recent article in Building Operating Management, security expert Sean Ahrens of Affiliated Engineers, Inc., observed that it is not difficult to carry out a deliberate attack with a car or truck, and recent tragic events have shown the truth of that statement. While a variety of measures can be taken to address that risk, security experts say options are often constrained by the location of the facility or by the characteristics of an existing building. Click through to read advice about protecting buildings and people from vehicle attacks, as well as other developments in security.
