How Much Data Is Too Much Data?

A QuickRead we published on FacilitiesNet.com earlier this week asks that very question — one for which we're not sure there's a universal answer. How much data you need to run your operation depends on several factors: the size of your building(s), the size of your staff, the technological capabilities of your systems, etc. In many cases, too much data is just as bad as not enough. There are strategies to ensure that your systems are giving you not just the right amount, but data in the format that you need to make decisions. What are yours?

Windows Are Getting Smarter

Call it dynamic glass or smart windows — either way, high-tech glazings are making their way into the FM arena. The most popular option for buildings uses electricity to change the tint of the glass, providing shade when the sun is beating down on that side of the building. Smart glass is being used in more than 1,000 buildings today, and that's only the beginning. New options seem likely in the next few years. Click through to learn about how smart windows work, the benefits they offer, and points to consider when deciding if they're right for you.

Rethinking the College Campus

At Arizona State University, journalism students have use of a professional-quality newsroom, studios, and digital-editing bays. The facilities are described by ASU as "closer to more major metropolitan news operations than any journalism school in the country." As someone who studied journalism decades ago in a windowless basement in one of my university's oldest buildings, I'm rabidly jealous. But it is a great example of how universities around the country are shifting their thinking around the learning environment to a more "purpose-driven learning" approach. Check out how other universities are tuning their facilities to match changing educational needs in this recent Building Operating Management article.

A New Generation of Refrigerants Is Coming

A big change is coming to your HVAC system: a new generation of refrigerants. HFCs like R-134a, R-404a, R-407a, and R-410a are being phased down because of their high global-warming potential. In their place will be HFO and "natural" refrigerants like carbon dioxide, ammonia, butane, and propane. The transition will take years to complete, but it's already underway. HVAC equipment manufacturers now offer some products that use new refrigerants, and refrigerant manufacturers are developing other alternatives. Now is a good time for FMs to start learning about the new options. Click through to see what to expect.
