Thoughts About Ceilings

How much thought do you give your ceilings? I was recently in the Atlanta airport and, as I was recovering from a refreshing sprint from my arrival gate to my departure gate, I noticed the waiting area felt... odd. Quickly I saw that the ceiling was missing. All the fixtures sported bright flags to assure the passersby they were affixed to the deck, regardless. So, while my fellow travelers stared down at their mobile devices, I stared up, tracing the network of cabling, conduit, and piping, and reflecting on the weirdness that the lack of ceiling tile created. Do you have a ceiling project planned? What are your thoughts on ceilings?

Let Your Solar Shine:
Have You Used a PPA?

An article in the July issue of Building Operating Management makes the case that Power Purchase Agreements are often an effective way for cash-strapped facility executives to get the benefits of solar energy systems, but without the high upfront cost of the panels. Have you used a solar PPA? What have you found to be the benefits? What challenges or questions need to be overcome or addressed?

3 Steps to Lift Safety

Exterior Maintenance:
Working with the Weather

Facility retrofits are rarely easy projects. Success depends on specifying and coordinating the delivery of a host of materials, equipment and tools, as well as ensuring the presence of enough qualified labor to complete the job — on or under budget, ideally. As if that were not enough, managers overseeing exterior projects also need to deal with inevitable problems caused by the weather. Mike Blackerby, director of operations with the Camden County School System, understands that challenge all too well, and discusses them in the June cover story of Facility Maintenance Decisions. Click through to read about his challenges and strategies, and share yours in a comment. How has weather impacted your exterior maintenance projects?
