Video: Why Should FMs Care About Occupant Health and Wellness?

If it's true that we spend between 80 and 90 percent of our time indoors, then being in healthy buildings is an utter imperative. In this video interview with Ray Carney, WELL AP, and vice president with Markon Solutions, Carney explains why we have to move beyond thoughts of first-cost and more to the long-term health and well-being of both the building and its occupants. He makes some compelling arguments for a healthy building equaling healthy occupants and a healthy organization. Do you agree?

New Thinking on Workplace Design

The workplace has become a living lab of sorts, with corporations trying different approaches to maximize collaboration, provide flexibility, appeal to younger workers, and ensure that technology is available when and where needed. The result has been ongoing innovation. A good example is circulation space. What used to be hallways has been transformed into multipurpose experiential space that occupies an increasing amount of floor space. These pathways are stylish, practical, and appealing, with seating and amenities. Click through for more on the latest thinking on workplace design, including its benefits. Then use the comment section to let me know what you think. I'm curious to know what operational challenges the new designs might represent.

Exterior Maintenance: Working with the Weather

Facility retrofits are rarely easy projects. Success depends on specifying and coordinating the delivery of a host of materials, equipment and tools, as well as ensuring the presence of enough qualified labor to complete the job — on or under budget, ideally. As if that were not enough, managers overseeing exterior projects also need to deal with inevitable problems caused by the weather. Mike Blackerby, director of operations with the Camden County School System, understands that challenge all too well, and discusses them in the June cover story of Facility Maintenance Decisions. Click through to read about his challenges and strategies, and share yours in a comment. How has weather impacted your exterior maintenance projects?

Smart Success at the U.S. Capitol

You might laugh at any description of what goes on in the U.S. Capitol building these days as "smart," but an article in the May issue of Building Operating Management shows how the U.S. Capitol has been undergoing upgrades over the last few years to make best use of new facility tech — analytics, smart meters, dashboards, etc. This kind of smart-building success can be a model for a commercial or institutional building anywhere. Click through to learn more, and use the comment section to tell me about your smart-building upgrades.
