Failing To Be Cyber Secure:
How Much Can It Cost You?

How much can failing to be cyber secure cost you? If you're Target, the answer is about a quarter billion dollars. That's BILLION, with a "B." The retail giant recently settled its data breach for $18.5 million, but that settlement is on top of the nearly $202 million the company says the breach cost. A recent QuickRead on FacilitiesNet.com lists some articles you can consult to work on cybersecurity in your facilities. They include advice on everything from working with IT to managing vendor credentials (the latter of which is what got Target in trouble). What steps have you found effective for dealing with cybersecurity?

Looking Back, Looking Ahead at Energy Policy

"As a building operator, four years is a short period of time in a building's life. We're going to be fine." I was quoting Allan Skodowski, managing senior vice president and director of LEED and sustainability services at Transwestern, to wrap up my energy policy forecast article in Building Operating Management earlier this year. I wanted to finish on an optimistic note. It did not seem like a Pollyanna-ish choice. I've thought about that quote a lot over the intervening weeks. What's new since I wrote the article? Energy Star, for one, seems to be in greater peril. States and local jurisdictions are continuing to move forward on their own accord. And, a lot is still on the table. What have you been thinking about regarding your own facilities and energy policy at the national and local level? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Buy Smart:
Maintenance Manager Specification Strategies

Among the most time-consuming and complex duties for maintenance and engineering managers is specifying products and technology for institutional and commercial facilities. Whether the materials support technicians' daily activities or go into new construction or upgrade projects, managers must make decisions that meet a host of demands related to cost, reliability, serviceability and sustainability. Their decisions go a long way in determining the success of their departments, and the work they perform.
