Understanding Windows in High-Performance Envelopes

Windows are not low-hanging fruit when it comes to energy efficiency, but they're certainly an important part of the mix. What has struck me as I've listened to how different projects ran the energy models on significant envelope renovations is how all the different factors interplay. There is no across-the-board best window system - there is only the best system for your facility's orientation, for your percentage of glazing, and thermal massing, and level of insulation, and shading system, and on. If you're getting ready to embark on an upgrade to your window system (or you just want to better understand what's going on at the perimeter), check out this Building Operating Management article. Then let me know about your window retrofit challenges.

With Paint, a Little Planning Goes a Long Way

The old phrase, "you get what you pay for," applies to paints as much as to any other subject. But with paints, it could easily be amended to say, "you get what you plan for." Facility managers should know where to look for ratings on paints, why paint specs should address more than paint, and which kinds of projects benefit from having specially qualified painters. This Building Operating Management article answers those questions, and more.

Why Is There a Boat Launch on that Roof?

Did you know that the basic motivation behind life/safety codes is trying to make sure you don't die because of the building? In a fire, building properly to code will allow the occupants the time to escape, for example. Which is great. Not dying is great. But what happens during the earthquake, the hurricane, the tornado? What happens afterwards, when there's no power or water, when the rest of your area's emergency resources are stretched thin, addressing myriad emergencies? Is your facility safe for re-entry? Is it operational? If you've thought beyond minimum code compliance and considered what it means to make your facility resilient, it might be.
