Failing Exterior Light Fixtures Vex Med Center Facility

The failing exterior fixtures turned into an ongoing saga for the maintenance staff of one California medical center. "The halogen lights we had were terrible," said the facility's director of corporate real estate. "We had numerous dark areas, and those halogens gave out so much heat they turned Plexiglas yellow. There was not enough light, and just a lot of work to replace them. Every time we replaced one, another burned out. And it wasn't just the light itself. It was the whole fixture you needed to replace." Read this multi-part feature to learn more about the efforts of the engineering department to address the concerns of occupants and visitors.

How To Prevent ADA Problems

2017 marks the 25th year in which ADA requirements have been in effect. Nevertheless, problems with compliance still exist. High-Performance Buildings and Occupant Satisfaction

As U.S. building owners and managers have talked about what they want to achieve in their office spaces, the conversation has shifted over the years. Talk before the Great Recession was aimed at the concept of producing: The goal of office design was to get the most possible from employees. Then the economy slumped, and everybody started wearing more and more hats. When the economy started getting a little better, suddenly the best talent was walking out the door because they finally had choice. The notion of choice and getting employees to choose to come to your office became a really big deal. Today, owners and managers want "high-performance buildings," and part of that image is fostering a high level of happiness, engagement and satisfaction among occupants. Building Operating Management will be looking again at the pursuit of happiness in the workplace. Until then, check out this still very relevant article from last year and let me know if there's been a shift in how your management thinks of occupants and office space.
