Water Conservation: Lessons Learned

Water conservation has become a nationwide priority, and managers are regularly seeking to curtail water use in and around their buildings. Here are some lessons learned by veterans of the water wars: "We used to spend thousands of dollars a month on plumbing repair kits for flush valves," said one. "We don't buy repair kits anymore…. the new low-flow [fixtures] that we put in have cartridge diaphragms, and they don't go bad." Said another, "I learned to stay away from proprietary irrigation systems that don’t have local suppliers, vendors and support. It's difficult to get spare parts." Another uncovered a lot of problems by using submetering. Click through to discover more useful tactics and strategies.

Tracking Shared Work Space

"How do you track employees, assets, etc., and/or facilitate shared work space? I'm wondering what FMs use to accomplish this: Do you use software to manage work space usage or provide searchable company floorplans? Do you track remote employees? What would the ideal tracking/work space management software do?" This myFacilitiesNet user works for a company who has developed a product that tracks assets and facilitates shared working spaces on company floorplans, and he’s interested in your experience.

Emergency Response:
Delay Could Be Disastrous

When I think of emergency response planning, it is with all parties on site: The middle of a workday, the middle of a school day. But what about those flux times, when people are transitioning between spaces? Here's a situation: As elementary students start reporting to school on a frigid winter day, the facility manager detects a whiff of gas. What does he or she do first? Said one commenter to my initial post, "...the first act is to initiate the emergency services: 911, followed by activating your MOG or SOP on evacuation. That should include a secondary location and the means to move the children to that location/reunification point along with notification to the parents. Delay could be disastrous." To prevent delays, preplanning is essential. Click through to find some of the coverage Building Operating Management has done on emergency response planning. Then let me know if there are any resources you know of, particular concerns you have, or best practices you have. This will be a topic I'll be tracking for future coverage.
