Lessons in Snow and Ice Management

Some preparations for weather involve quick response to rapidly changing conditions. But effective planning for winter requires a more methodical strategy for grounds managers at institutional and commercial facilities. In a recent article in Facility Maintenance Decisions, Robert Doletzky, supervisor of turf, irrigation and grounds maintenance with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, said, "It really doesn't ever stop. Every spring, we recap the previous winter to see what went well, what didn't go so well, [and] where we need to make changes while it's fresh in our minds. In spring and summer, we adjust or replace our equipment as necessary."

Water-Efficient Restroom Products

Although it got started on the residential side, EPA's WaterSense program now has a full suite of water-efficient product specifications for commercial and institutional restrooms. The latest offering is a spec for flushometer-valve toilets. Earlier WaterSense specifications covered urinals and tank-type toilets. Nearly 3,000 models of urinals, tank-type toilets, and flushometer-valve toilets have earned WaterSense certification, making it a great resource for facility managers looking for water-efficient products. Click through to learn more about WaterSense from a recent article in Building Operating Management. Are you being asked to comply with water-saving initiatives?
