Video: Creating Healthier, More Productive Facilities

I recently attended the Greenbuild show in Los Angeles and had a chance to speak with Nathan Stodola, vice president of product development with the International WELL Building Institute. The WELL Building Standard focuses directly on the occupants of the building, and goes into great detail on how the built environment impacts humans on a physical level. This standard goes far beyond surface-level ergonomics and aesthetic considerations to focus on how building systems influence distinct systems within the human body. In this video interview with Stodola, FMs can learn how the WELL Building Standard can be used to help create healthier, happier, and more productive environments. Then let me know whether you think such initiatives would work in your facility.

Hurricane Warning: Preparing for Flooding

It might be too late for folks on the Eastern seaboard of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, but the ominous threat of catastrophic damage from Hurricane Matthew should remind maintenance and engineering managers and facility managers across the country of that old Boy Scouts motto: Be Prepared. The Medical University of South Carolina spent $40.5 million on replacing, moving and updating critical components to help better prepare for a 1,000-year flood that actually occurred less than a year after the renovations were completed. With Charleston in the path of Matthew, we hope the plan will pass the test once again. Read about their preparations, and let me know how you are—or are not—prepared for possible hurricanes and floods.
