Where is This Energy-Saving Gem?

"The building includes a double-skinned facade, the outer layer made of frameless glass and an inner layer of double-glazed full-height glass. This strategy helps reduce glare to occupant space and solar heat gain by 26 percent, which also saves energy on cooling. As well, about 55 percent of this facade is covered in living plants..." People, Plumbing, and Planning for a Stampede

Robert Gosse knows the stampede is coming, and he cannot stop it. Nor does he want to. "We see 850,000 people in 11 days, compared to a hospital, which might see 850,000 people in a year," says Gosse, director of design and construction with Milwaukee World Festival Inc. "When it's noon on Wednesday, the gates open, and everything just gets hit by the worst-case scenario. We get 85,000 people over 12 hours. The power usage goes from almost nothing to almost as high as it can go. Every toilet is getting flushed repeatedly. Every blade of grass is getting stepped on. Everything is being put to its maximum test for 11 days." Find out how Gosse and others upgraded restrooms and facilities to meet the demands.

One Inspiring Interview

My favorite part about being the senior editor of Building Operating Management is the interviews I get to do. I love getting to go deep with facility managers involved with a specific technology or a particular initiative and find out all the details on how it works. But closest to my heart are the interviews I do with facility managers. One should not pick favorites, but I will say one of my most inspiring interviews was with Scott Minnix, director of the General Services Department for the City of Houston. Click through to find out how he juggles day-to-day decisions, maintenance backlogs, inspiring his staff to reach for greater heights, and more.
