Integrating BIM with CMMS

A question from a reader, Matthew Judge: Does anyone have any plans to integrate BIM with their CMMS? If so, what is your strategy and process for integration and type of CMMS? One commenter says the idea of integrating BIM's information into a CMMS tool and workflow is premature and one would be better off scrutinizing the effort vs. benefits. See the discussion and weigh in.

Design Considerations for the Vision Impaired

I recently had a conversation with a woman who is vision impaired. I asked her what she wished facility managers and building owners would improve or focus on to make it easier for people with vision impairments, but who are not totally blind, to navigate comfortably in a facility. She gave me some interesting tips, most of which would be of use to anyone, sighted or not, which of course gets into the benefits of universal design. But she added one bit I'd never heard before. Read on, and let me us know your tips and experiences.

Campus Beehive Improves FM/Occupant Communications

When talking with maintenance and engineering managers, the conversation often turns to interaction with the occupants at institutional and commercial facilities. Most managers have a good rapport with staff, students and the general public, but many also say it could be better. Craig Petersen, the director of operations for facilities management at the University of San Francisco, brought a beehive on to campus for the staff and students to help maintain, and the results have been great. I talked with Craig about the project for a Facilities Maintenance Decisions 5 Minutes With Podcast. Listen and let me know what you think.

Power Tools and OSHA Concerns

We talked with manufacturers about power tool technology in the June issue of Facility Maintenance Decisions, and we had some additional nuggets of information that didn't make it onto the printed page. Read here about OSHA standards regarding power tools, and what maintenance and engineering managers can expect in the near future.
