What's Your Definition of a Smart Building?

Can you define what a smart building is? And are we there yet? One person said, "A truly intelligent building is informative, predictive, responsive, adaptive, diagnostic, corrective, and self-healing." Another believes that "the concept of a 'smart' building needs to change with the times. It is no longer sufficient to be 'informative' and 'responsive'; these types of 'smart buildings' were from the 80's." Check out our article on how to define and build a business case for smart buildings. Then let us know your definition.

An Overview of the Building Internet of Things

Building Operating Management is devoting a lot of time and focus on the Building Internet of Things in our coverage this year. This is no longer a scenario of what ifs and fantastic futuristic applications, but a daily reality that facility managers have to understand. We're breaking our coverage into smaller bites throughout the year, including an article in the May issue on what IoT means in the context of building automation systems (BAS). But to get a large-picture perspective, I'd like to direct you to our October coverage, which discussed what the Building IoT is, how it can benefit facility managers, and where to find examples of current and future applications. What's your take on the Building Internet of Things?
