10 Great Books for FM Leaders

During the latest Women in FM panel presentation at NFMT in Baltimore, one of the panelists had developed a great list of books she found particularly helpful in the context of leadership in Facilities Management. For those of you who have attended that session, you know there is never enough time, and I never figured out a natural way to broach the topic during the panel. So, I am posting her list here. Please add your own suggestions in the comments. And, if you've read any of these books, what did you think of it? Lastly, please don't feel like you must be a woman to comment on this thread. All bibliophiles welcome!

Occupancy Sensors: Complaints and Management Strategies

A hospital worker in Japan reports automated restroom lights cutting out too soon, leaving the patients in the dark. Now, that's an annoying trait of occupancy sensors in an office space setting, but there users can just stand up and flap their arms to get the lights back on. It gets kind of awkward when you're trapping people in stalls, in the dark. Doesn't seem like an optimal situation, particularly in a restroom. What are your experiences with occupancy sensors? How do you make sure the lights don't cycle off too soon, while still capturing the energy efficiency benefits you're after with the occ sensors in the first place? Do you have any good stories? Post them in the comments or send them to me directly.

Tips for a Massive LED Light Upgrade

One of America's most prestigious universities is in the middle of an ambitious LED replacement program - more than 100,000 fixtures. Princeton University is implementing many different energy-mitigation projects on campus, and lighting was determined to be a strategy with one of the best overall paybacks. The university's Energy Group is funding the program, which represents the first significant lighting upgrade at Princeton in more than 20 years.
