Mobile Technology: Where Does Your Department Stand?

We recently surveyed maintenance and engineering managers about how effective their departments are at using mobile technology and will release the results in an upcoming article in Facility Maintenance Decisions. But we've got an offer for you: We'll give you a sneak peek at the results if you're willing to tell us about your experiences going mobile — be it with laptops, iPhones, iPads, or other devices. We're also interested in seeing how you incorporate social media into your department.

Is All Daylight Good Daylight?

Easy answer: No. "There's a difference between daylight and sunlight," says Denise Fong, principal, Stantec. "You want diffuse daylight, but you don't want direct sunlight. Once you've designed for that, you can figure out how to control electric light to balance with daylight." Read about what others have to say, then tell me how do you use daylighting to maximum effect. What are your own best practices?

How to Make a Smart Flooring Selection

Did I like the splotchy colorful pattern on a black background, or the taupe stripey pattern on a slate background? Holding the sample carpet tiles, I tried to imagine the pattern repeating over hundreds of square feet. That was a long time ago, back when I had no clue how complex a flooring decision should be. How it looks is certainly a big consideration when selecting flooring but, for commercial facilities, it is equally (more?) important to consider how the flooring will perform, how it is constructed, and what you're going to do with it once you're done with it. Our article reviews some of the big considerations when looking at sustainable flooring, and provides a fairly detailed overview of the major third-party flooring certifications available. Read it and let me know which certification(s) you look for first when making flooring decisions. Are there any missing from the list in the article?
