FROM THE EDITOR

Let’s be honest, you’re probably about ready to throw an energy meter through the window the next time you hear someone impart upon you this nugget of wisdom: “You can’t manage, what you don’t measure.” Facility managers know this. It’s practically the Golden Rule of energy and water management.

But knowing how your buildings are performing in terms of water and energy use is possible only if you have a basis of comparison – whether with your own historical data or that of other similar building types. And so the second Golden Rule of energy and water management is to benchmark. Constantly.

At the High-Performance Buildings and Workplaces show in Austin, Texas May 3-4 (Wow, that’s only two weeks away! Are you registered? It’s free!), several sessions will illustrated the whys and hows of measuring and benchmarking. It’s a good opportunity to review the state-of-the-art for what is unquestionably an industry best practice.

This is especially true these days as buildings are smarter and more technologically advanced, including Building Internet of Things devices that can talk to each other and alert FMs when something is wrong. The days of entering utility data into Excel are long past!

As always, I’m interested to hear from you. What strategies or technologies have you found work best to benchmark energy and water use?

Cheers,

Greg Zimmerman, editor
