FROM THE EDITOR

Next week, the facility management community descends upon Baltimore for our annual NFMT show. This will be my 13th NFMT, and each new year, I’m amazed again at the depth and breadth of the education sessions. Yes, it’s our show, but I might as well be an attendee, too – jumping in and out of as many of the sessions as I can to brush up on everything from the energy management to ADA to budgeting a carpet maintenance plan.

But in addition to learning what’s new about “old” topics, there are always new topics or trends to learn about as well. This year, a topic that’s making an emphatic NFMT debut is the Building Internet of Things. Over the course of the three-day show, there are seven (count ‘em, SEVEN) sessions specifically focused on IoT, facility management, and high-performance buildings. (You can see the full list of NFMT sessions here.)

Perhaps the highlight of these sessions is a panel moderated by our editor, Edward Sullivan, titled “The Internet of Things: A Guide For Facility Managers.” This session, which happens Tuesday, March 22 at 11 am, will feature three key experts on IoT technology, and show FMs how they can use IoT technology for everything from energy efficiency to improved occupant comfort.

Indeed, IoT is a hot topic, but it’s not just a flash-in-the-pan – it’s a technology FMs should learn about now. The potential benefits of the IoT are many.

We hope to see you next week in Baltimore. Reminder: The show is 100 percent free to attend. You can register here.

Cheers,

Greg Zimmerman, editor
