FROM THE EDITOR

Each fall, one of my favorite trade shows (outside of our own NFMT High-Performance Buildings, of course), Greenbuild, ties a most emphatic bow on the busy trade show season. And so I as I head out to Washington, D.C., today for this year’s Greenbuild, I’m especially excited to look more deeply into three major trends we’ve been covering over the course of this last year.

3. Resilience complements green — Making buildings more resilient is inherently a sustainability strategy for a number of reasons — most notably, the more energy efficient a building, the longer it’s able to run on backup power if the grid goes down. Resilience has become an industry buzzword on near the same level “sustainability” was a few years ago, so it’ll be interesting to see how vendors are tapping into this new concept — and to separate the “resiliencewash” from the actual meat.

2. Is real-time monitoring ready for primetime? — Over the last 3-4 years at Greenbuild, we’ve been introduced to various advancements in the LEED Dynamic Plaque — from “here it is,” to “alright, you can use it now.” But can we? Is the technology advanced and easy enough to allow any facility to use what amounts to a very sophisticated dashboard system? So I’m especially interested to see how USGBC presents advances to the LEED Dynamic Plaque this year.

1. Building connectivity and the Internet of Things — Smart buildings are high-performance buildings, and high-performance buildings MUST be smart. But is the former always as true as the latter? Most would say probably not – it’s still quite possible to have a smart building operated poorly and performing badly. How do recent advances in BAS technology and incorporating Internet of Things (computers talking to each other, and knowing that they’re computers, or as one expert explained, it’s an occupancy sensor saying to the BAS, “Hi, I’m an occupancy sensor!”) to creating truly smart, high-performance buildings?

If you’re at the show, stop by and see us at Booth #4114 – or if you see me hustling around, flag me down. I’d love to stop and chat!

Cheers,

The Building Internet of Things and the BAS

The building Internet of Things makes use of many technologies already in place in a building. If you have a BAS, you’re halfway there, says one expert.
