FROM THE EDITOR

As we’re into the football, falling leaves, and pumpkin spice of autumn, we’re finally ready to retire the now-seven-year-old LEED 2009 rating system as well. October 31 is the last day FMs will be able to register projects under the old rating system, and the “new” one, LEED v4 will step into the spotlight, ready for its close-up.

If you’ve been putting off learning about LEED v4, here are a few need-to-knows related to the LEED for Building Operation and Maintenance rating system.

The new rating system has several more prerequisites which, in total, make the rating system much more rigorous. For instance, a minimum Energy Star score of 75 is now a requirement for any level of certification.  As well, users are now required to do building-level water metering. And as one more example, green cleaning policy is now required, whereas before, it was simply a credit.

All this adds up to what USGBC says is its goal for LEED: To make it a leadership standard that helps bring about market transformation.

As always, I’m interested to hear from you. Have you looked into LEED v4? Planning to use it at your facilities?

Cheers,

Greg Zimmerman, editor
