Four simple roofing design principles can improve energy efficiency and reduce natural resource consumption.

The article, “Roofing Materials: Assessing Environmental Impact,” does a nice job of outlining four roofing design principles (listed below) that can improve a building’s overall energy-efficiency and reduce its natural resource consumption.

  1. Use a geographically appropriate roof color based on whether you are in a heating- or cooling-dominated climate.
  2. Eliminate thermal bridging of fasteners.
  3. Incorporate air and vapor barriers.
  4. Use multiple layers of insulation, installed with staggered joints.
